Two Kinds Blog Assignment

Since I was young, my parents had always wanted me to be academically successful in school. Today throughout High School, I have always managed to pass a class and maintain a GPA near a 4.0. However, when I was in Elementary School, I had mediocre grades and often had behavioral problems. This resulted in conflict between my parents and I. My parents thought I needed to try harder and I thought it wasn't serious since I hadn't know the importance of school at this time. My parents solution was to restrict me from going outside and playing until I had improved in Elementary School. Eventually, my parents stopped being so disappointed in my Elementary Schools performance since they found out that it doesn't matter that much compared to High School. From then on, I realized that I might not know everything about my surroundings, since I had learned the importance of school in the latter parts of Elementary School.

Two Kinds

Today in Multicultural Literature, we read the short story “Two Kinds” which is apart of a larger collection of short stories called The Joy Luck Club . After reading a portion of the short story, I began to resonate with the protagonist of the story as I have also shared similar experiences with her at many points throughout my life. I like how the short story incorporates two different perspectives when it comes to immigrant life in the United States. Today I am feeling good.

Vocabulary

Today in Multicultural Literature, we worked on our first vocabulary list in preparation for a short story we will read throughout the week. After completing the vocabulary list, i’ve learned various new vocabulary words such as elation, reverie, and sulked. I liked the aspect of using images in our vocabulary list to portray what the words mean in a visual context. My day has been going fine.

I, Too

Today in Multicultural Literature we read and interpreted Langston Hughes’ poem I, Too. After reading and interpreting the poem, I learned more about self identity and what it means to be an American. I liked how there were multiple interpretations to the poem that could be made. The questions might’ve been difficult to answer at times since there is no definitive answer for each one. I am currently feeling great.
