Two Kinds

Today in Multicultural Literature, we read the short story “Two Kinds” which is apart of a larger collection of short stories called The Joy Luck Club. After reading a portion of the short story, I began to resonate with the protagonist of the story as I have also shared similar experiences with her at many points throughout my life. I like how the short story incorporates two different perspectives when it comes to immigrant life in the United States. Today I am feeling good.

Prompt: Write about a conversation that changed you.

 The first time I heard about my parents upbringing was the first conversation that significantly changed me. Before my parents told me about their upbringing I hadn’t given it much thought considering I was still in Elementary School. Once I reached Middle School was the first time my parents mentioned their upbringing to me in detail. Hearing about the differences of living in rural Mexico compared to the United States made me realize how fortunate I am to be living here.  Today in Multicultural Literature we worked on familiarizing ourselves with new vocabulary terms for the college bound. Initially, I was only familiar with a few of the words seen in the vocabulary, but now i’m beginning to learn the rest of the vocabulary words. Learning new vocabulary words helps to make people’s writing more convoluted. I am doing good.

Prompt: Describe a time when you took a hiatus from something important. What led to the break, and how did it impact you?

 I took a major hiatus from chess during sophomore and junior year of high school. My father taught me how to play chess casually at a young age but I begun learning actual chess theory during the 2020 covid year. Online chess was one of my favorite hobbies during quarantine and I played in a few online tournaments. I enjoyed playing chess online until sophomore year where I ended up becoming bored with chess and moving on to something else. A few months ago, I logged onto my online chess account and queued into a few chess games. I immediately realized how much I had forgotten about chess, primarily the memorization of the chess openings I would used to play. From that moment on, I learned the importance of consistency.
